Streaming Highlights Final Mid-Season Round In PSL
14 Nov 2005
Tomorrow's fifth round of the Premier League - the final round of the first half of the PSL season - sees two former champions battle for mid-season supremacy before a worldwide audience!
2004 champions Manchester/Pontefract entertain 2003 champions Churchill Edgbaston Priory - this season's only unbeaten team - at the National Squash Centre in Manchester, with the hosts led by England's world No5 Lee Beachill and the Birmingham club squad headed by Australia's world No6 David Palmer.
In a PSL breakthrough this season, the audience for this top string battle will not only be the crowd surrounding the all-glass showcourt at the NSC, but a worldwide web following who can log on to www.psalive.tv (or access the facility via the official PSL site www.premiersquashleague.com) and view the match via internet streaming.
Both teams are fielding strong squads in a bid to head the North Group points table going into next year: Alongside Yorkshireman Beachill for Manchester/Pontefract will be James Willstrop, the world No8, also from Yorkshire; David Evans, the former British Open champion from Wales; NSC Head Coach Nick Taylor; and Yorkshire's world No8 Jenny Duncalf. Backing Palmer for the visitors will be London's world No19 Adrian Grant; Essex man Peter Barker, the world No21; Devon's Hadrian Stiff; and Lancashire's world No7 Vicky Botwright.
Beachill and Palmer will be meeting a week after contesting the US Open final, which the Englishman won in a dramatic 84-minute marathon. The PSL clash will be the pair's 16th tournament or British league meeting since the beginning of last year - with Beachill currently ahead 9-6.
The James Willstrop/Adrian Grant and Jenny Duncalf/Vicky Botwright encounters will also be streamed. By contrast, Willstrop and Grant have only met twice in the past two years - the first being in the 2004 PSL final between the two teams, with Willstrop victorious in four games. The career head-to-head tally between Duncalf and Botwright shows the Manchester star to be ahead by 4 wins to 2 - the most recent of which was on the same NSC court in September's Gerard Grand Prix final when Botwright won in a five-game marathon, three of the games going to tie-breaks!
Defending PSL champions Wolverhampton take on Derbyshire's Benz-Bavarian Duffield, bringing to the home club the same line-up which won the league trophy for the first time in May. British Open champion Anthony Ricketts, the world No3 from Australia, leads the hosts and will face Duffield top string Nick Matthew, the world No11 from Sheffield.
With South Group leaders UniSport Guildford resting this round, event newcomers Surrey Health & Racquets Croydon field a strong squad in a bid to overtake their county rivals after their home tie against Team Chichester. Former world No1 Peter Nicol heads the Croydon club squad, and will take on the visitors' Surrey champion Ben Garner. Also making her second appearance for the hosts is Malaysian star Nicol David, the world No3 who faces England No1 Linda Elriani in her first match after a long layoff with a hamstring injury.
Fast-rising English squash star Joey Barrington leads University Sport Birmingham in their home fixture against Oberthur Strings Tewkesbury. The Gloucestershire club's squad also features a number of rising national talents, including Essex's Daryl Selby and local players Alister Walker and Alex Stait.
