Dessouky Downs Steinmann As German Open Finalists Confirmed
23 Mar 2025

World No.16 Fares Dessouky came back from a game behind to defeat Switzerland's Dimitri Steinmann as the finalists were decided on an action-packed day of semi-final action at the German Open Presented by Sportwerk in Hamburg.
In the first men's match of the day, Egyptian No.3 seed Dessouky won out in a difficult test against Switzerland's Steinmann to progress to Sunday's final.
An impressive start to the match saw the Swiss player playing some fantastic winners, but it was unforced errors from Dessouky that made the difference to give the No.6 seed an early 1/0 lead.
The Egyptian came onto court in the second game, and cut out the costly mistakes, and Steinmann could not find an answer as Dessouky earned 11-5, 11-6, 11-6 wins to claim victory over the 'Jet'.
Speaking after the match, Dessouky said: "He's so aggressive on court - both of us are so aggressive - so you know it's going to be hard. Today I prepared myself mentally first instead of just focusing on the squash, because the mental side is so important, especially for my game."
No.3 seed Amanda Sobhy produced an almost faultless performance against No.2 seed Nada Abbas to take her place in the women's final.
The former world No.4 looked in total control as her accurate squash simply couldn't be matched in any way by the higher-seeded Egyptian.
Abbas found winners, but struggled to back them up as Sobhy kept the pressure on the No.2 seed to great effect to earn a place in the final after a dominant straight-game performance, dropping just 12 points across the 22-minute match.
Elsewhere, top seed and defending champion Georgina Kennedy stormed to a straight-game win with an emphatic display against France's Melissa Alves.
Kennedy was all over the court in the first game as Alves was unable to get a grip on the frantic tempo, with the Englishwoman earning an 11-1 win.
From there, Alves grew into the match, but ultimately the defending champion was always in control as she charged to a 3/0 victory and a place in the final to defend her 2024 title.
World No.15 Victor Crouin produced a fantastic performance to overcome former world No.13 Nicolas Mueller in the last match of the night.
Crouin surged to an immediate decisive 8-1 lead in game one. Every shot that Crouin attempted found its target, and Mueller, through no fault of his own, was left in a seven point deficit.
The 'Swiss Rocket' mounted a late comeback, bringing himself within two points, but it was the Frenchman who took the 1/0 advantage in the match.
Crouin repeated the first-game performance in games two and three as he dominated the rallies and didn't allow Mueller into the match to storm to 11-2, 11-6 wins and book his place in the final.
