Nele Coll Avenges Recent Defeat To Reach US Open Quarters

23 Oct 2024

World No.5 Nele Coll avenged her recent shock defeat to Sana Ibrahim to advance to the quarter-finals of the Comcast Business US Open Championships, claiming a four-game victory over the Egyptian on day four of the Platinum-level event in Philadelphia.

The Belgian was stunned by Ibrahim in round two of the PSA Squash Tour's first-ever Diamond event, the Egyptian Open, a few weeks ago but managed to turn the tables on her opponent by fighting from a game behind to win 8-11, 11-5, 11-8, 12-10 at the Arlen Specter US Squash Center.

Despite a confidence-boosting victory over the USA's Amanda Sobhy in the previous round, Coll cut an edgy figure throughout periods of the match, never quite finding her very best squash.

However, Coll's big-match experience ultimately proved decisive, with the 28-year-old moving away from 7-7 in the third to take a crucial 2/1 lead and subsequently holding off a resurgent comeback from Ibrahim in the fourth to seal victory.

"I think it was just all the tension and frustration coming out at the end," Coll said moments after victory. "She's such a dangerous opponent and especially with a court like this where it's so dead, she just shoots, and it just made me quite edgy today.

"I didn't watch the last match back. I wanted to forget about that match as quickly as possible, but I knew exactly what I did wrong there. I wouldn't say I got it right today but it was better."

Elsewhere, world No.9 Mohamed ElShorbagy claimed a brutal four-game win over Sebastien Bonmalais to set up a quarter-final tie with current World Champion Diego Elias, who conquered fellow South American Miguel Rodriguez in straight games.

There was also a notable win for University of Pennsylvania alumnus Aly Abou Eleinen, who advanced to the second Platinum quarter-final of his career after defeating No.7 seed Tarek Momen for the second time in as many events.
