Men's Seeds Suffer In Cairo

9 May 2011

Omar Abdel Aziz became the lone men's seed to make it through to the last four of the Egyptian Circuit No1 after beating fellow Egyptian Wael Farag in the quarter-finals of the PSA World Tour Challenger 10 squash event at the Shooting Club in Cairo.

The 27-year-old second seed from Cairo despatched 21-year-old Farag 11-5, 11-6, 11-3 in just 28 minutes - and will now face Amr Swelim for a place in the final.

The Cairo-born Italian ousted Egyptian qualifier Mohamed Abouelghar 11-8, 14-12, 11-5.

But Omar Abdel Meguid pulled off the biggest upset when he overcame favourite Karim Abdel Gawad 13-11, 5-11, 11-7, 8-11, 11-9 in a 113-minute marathon.

Unseeded Meguid, ranked more than 60 places lower than his opponent, now takes on fellow countryman Amr Khaled Khalifa.

Unseeded Khalifa, the reigning World Junior Champion, stunned fourth seed Andrew Wagih Shoukry 11-6, 11-7, 11-8.

Order was restored in the women's WISPA World Tour 8 event when the four top seeds survived the quarter-finals in straightforward style.

Favourite Heba El Torky faced her sister Nouran El Torky for the second time on the WISPA Tour - but again kept her younger sibling at bay with a 10-12, 11-7, 12-10, 11-6 victory.

The 20-year-old from Alexandria now faces England's newly-crowned European Junior champion Emily Whitlock after the 17-year-old third seed defeated 18-year-old Egyptian Salma Hany 11-9, 11-8, 11-3.
