Engelbrecht Rallies To Rhode Island Title
24 Nov 2008
South African Jesse Engelbrecht claimed the inaugural Rhode Island Open title in the USA after beating Irishman Liam Kenny in straight games in the final of the $10,000 PSA Tour squash event at St George's School in Rhode Island.
After surviving a 98-minute first round clash against unseeded Canadian Michal Reid, fourth seed Engelbrecht went on to get past Shawn Delierre, also from Canada, when the second seed retired injured midway through the third game.
Kenny was also a surprise finalist - the third seed from Dublin fighting back from 2/1 down to topple top seed Yasser El Halaby, from Egypt, in the other semi-final.
But Engelbrecht, the UK-based world No16 from Durban, was too strong for the Irishman, winning 11-9, 12-10, 11-7 in 46 minutes to secure his first Tour title in his seventh year as a full-time player.
Final:
[4] Jesse Engelbrecht (RSA) bt [3] Liam Kenny (IRL) 11-9, 12-10, 11-7 (46m)
