Lust Lifted By Laura's Leinster Loss
3 Oct 2008
Hopes of an all Irish quarter-final in the Bymac Leinster Open in Dublin were scuppered as Laura Mylotte lost her first round match in the WISPA World Tour event at the Fitzwilliam Lawn Tennis Club.
The Galway girl let slip a two-game lead to English qualifier Victoria Lust, eventually losing out 7-11, 9-11, 11-7, 11-9, 11-9 in just under an hour. Hopes of home success in the women's event now rest firmly in the hands of world number 31 Aisling Blake, who beat the Czech Republic's Lucie Fialova 11-5, 12-10, 11-3 in an impressive opener.
Lust, 19, from Maulden in Bedfordshire, now faces third seed Blake in the quarter-finals.
Top seed Latasha Khan from the USA eased through her first game, beating England's Alexandra Norman in straight games. Fourth seed Orla Noom from Holland raced into a two game lead only to see her lead slip to England's Kimberley Hay. The Haarlem-born 22-year-old did manage to regain her concentration to dominate the deciding game to beat the qualifier 11-5, 11-5, 11-13, 13-15, 11-3.
Irish number two John Rooney put in a fine performance in the men's $12,000 PSA Tour event to ease through his first match at Fitzwilliam. The Galway man produced a flawless display to dispatch France's Yann Perrin 11-3, 11-8, 11-6. His 25-minute straight game victory will have sharpened up his game and saved some valuable energy for his quarter-final where he faces another French opponent, fourth seed Mathieu Castagnet.
Rooney, currently ranked 100 in the world, will relish his chance to take on Castagnet, the world number 81, for a place in the semi-final.
Event favourite Chris Ryder, the world No33 from Wolverhampton, claimed his place in the quarter-finals with a comfortable 11-4, 11-8, 11-8 win over South African Clinton Leeuw.
